Pedal Nylon and Pedal Gut - For the highest octaves (Zero Octave through most of the 5th Octave) you have your choice of Pedal Nylon or Pedal Gut strings. You can use either type of string throughout these octaves, but most harpists string their harps in one of two ways: Zero Octave and 1st Octave in Pedal Nylon and 2nd through 5th in Pedal Gut Zero Octave through 2nd Octave in Pedal Nylon and 3rd through 5th in Pedal Gut
Two Types of Pedal Gut - We now offer a choice of two kinds of Pedal Gut strings. We have always carried the high-quality Bow Brand “Pedal Gut” strings. We now offer Burgundy Gut strings, which are an economical alternative. Manufactured by Bow Brand, Burgundy strings have slight visual imperfections, such as variations in color, which will not affect performance any way. Priced up to 30% below Bow Brand, these strings are popular with both students and professional harpists.
Bass Wire Strings - You also have several choices for the types of bass wire strings (2 strings in the 5th Octave, and all of the 6th and 7th Octaves). The two main types are "Standard Wires" and "Tarnish Resistant Wires".
The "Standard Wires" are silver-plated, and the C and F strings are copper-plated. These strings will tarnish with age. The "Tarnish Resistant Wires" are nickel-plated, and the C and F strings are bronze-plated. These strings will not tarnish.
Both of these types of wire strings have "silver-colored" A, B, D, E, and G strings, and "golden-colored" or "bronze-colored" C and F strings. If you'd like to have red C wires and black F wires, be sure to order the "Colored Wires". Colored Wires are also Tarnish Resistant and may found listed as the third option on the Bass Wire Strings page.
If you have an older pedal harp. it may not have some of the highest strings. For example, if the highest note on your harp is an E, you do not have any Zero Octave strings, and the highest note on your harp would be the 1st Octave E.
